How Online Multiplayer Works

Millions play, but not all together

Lots of people play GTA Online at the same time worldwide. The game does not put everyone in one city. It splits people into many separate sessions. Each session is like a small room with the same map but only a limited number of real players, often around 30 on console, sometimes more on PC.
Tip: Think of it like many copies of Los Santos running at once, each with a few dozen players.

What is a session?

A session is your current online lobby. Everyone in your session shares the same freemode city and can see each other driving around. Players in other sessions are invisible to you, you cannot meet them unless you join the same session or get invited.

Session types

Public session: random players in your city. Solo session: only you, good for grinding peacefully. Invite-only / friends session: only people you invite. You can change session from the Interaction Menu → Find New Session.
Tip: Use Solo or Passive Mode if random players keep attacking you.

Can you meet other players?

Yes, in freemode within your session. You see their characters in the world. You can drive together, race, help, or fight. Missions and heists usually put you in a separate instance with only the players in that job, random people in the city do not join your Cayo Perico run unless you invite them.

Voice chat and microphone

You can talk with a microphone, but not to all millions of players. Proximity voice: in freemode you hear players near your character (can be turned off). Party chat: Xbox Party, PlayStation Party, Steam voice, or Discord. Ccommon for heists with friends. You can mute individual players from the Interaction Menu.
Tip: Many players mute strangers and only use party chat with friends. Check Audio settings to disable voice from random players.

Your progress is yours alone

Each player has their own character, money, rank, cars, and properties. Other players cannot steal your save or your Kosatka. You share the city in freemode, but your jobs, heists, and purchases are on your account only.
