GTA 6 Crossplay

What is actually confirmed

Nothing. Rockstar has made no statement about crossplay, cross-progression or shared lobbies for GTA 6, and has not confirmed that GTA 6 Online exists as a launch product at all. That silence is worth stating plainly, because the question gets asked constantly and the answer is regularly presented as settled when it is not.

Why GTA Online never had it

The precedent cuts against crossplay, and it is worth understanding why rather than just noting it. GTA Online launched in 2013 across separate platform ecosystems with different certification processes and patch schedules, so the versions drifted apart. The deeper problem was PC: the modding scene that makes single-player GTA wonderful also made GTA Online's PC lobbies a cheating problem Rockstar never fully solved. Merging those lobbies with console players would have exported that problem to platforms that did not have it.

What has changed since 2013

Several things, genuinely. GTA 6 launches on two consoles simultaneously rather than staggered across a generation transition, so there is no version drift to reconcile. Crossplay has also become an industry default rather than a differentiator — Fortnite, Call of Duty and Rocket League all normalised it, and players now treat its absence as a defect. Rockstar has had a decade to build matchmaking infrastructure with this in mind.

The PC problem has not gone away

This is the part most discussions skip. Even if Rockstar ships console crossplay, the argument against pooling PC players with console players is the same one that applied in 2013, and PC cheating has not become easier to police. The likeliest shape, if crossplay happens, is PS5 and Xbox sharing lobbies while PC stays separate — which is exactly what several large multiplayer titles settled on after trying the alternative.

What about cross-progression?

Worth separating from crossplay, because people conflate them. Crossplay means playing together; cross-progression means carrying your character and money between platforms. Rockstar did eventually offer one-way GTA Online migrations between generations, so some form of account-linked progression is more plausible than shared lobbies. Neither is confirmed.
Tip: If you are choosing a platform to buy on, choose the one your friends are using. That advice holds whether or not crossplay ships.
