GTA 6 Car Theft Overhaul: WAINK App, Slim Jim QTE, and Key Cloner

Part of our GTA 6 Extended Look breakdown. In GTA 5, most parked cars opened with a quick smash or enter prompt. GTA 6 treats vehicle theft as a mini-system — security tiers, tools, phone apps, and economic payoff.

Tiered security on parked cars

The Extended Look shows older vehicles broken into with a slim jim through a QTE — push the tool, jimmy the lock, or fail and retry. On-screen text notes you can smash the window for a faster but sloppier steal that likely attracts attention.

Newer luxury cars require better equipment. Preview footage shown to IGN featured a key cloner for high-end models — gear you may not own early in the story. Some vehicles are effectively locked until Jason or Lucia progress further.

Traditional carjacking still works when someone is already in the driver's seat — instant access at the cost of witnesses and violence.

WAINK app — scan before you steal

Rockstar's private preview demo introduced a smartphone app called WAINK (spelling as reported by preview outlets). Aim it at a parked vehicle to read:

  • Estimated resale value
  • Cost to register the car as a personal vehicle
  • Whether doors are locked
  • Alarm or tracker status

That turns theft into a decision: is this chassis worth the risk? Luxury cars pay more but carry trackers that ping police during escape. Damaged vehicles sell for less at fences — preview reporters were told condition affects payout.

WAINK did not get a long explanation in the public Extended Look, but it aligns with the footage of Jason and Lucia treating cars as income, not disposable set dressing.

Fences and criminal economy

Preview coverage describes fences — contacts who buy stolen goods and vehicles. Money matters more in GTA 6's progression; reporters were told some story beats require raising set amounts of cash through robberies, car sales, and side hustles.

The Extended Look HUD shows two money totals — cash carried versus bank balance — with comma formatting finally added. Selling a clean steal likely moves money through that economy in ways GTA 5's passive garage system did not.

Tactical theft during wanted levels

When police identify your escape vehicle, the wanted HUD's car icon stays lit. Switching to an unmarked van drops that icon in the Extended Look chase. Stealing strategically — quiet, alarm-free cars — becomes part of losing heat, not just getting away faster.

Lucia torches a spotted car before swapping rides, a cinematic beat that may also destroy evidence linking the duo to that plate.
